3rd magazine research
Here is a magazine called 'Big Cheese' It is an independant British magazine which cover alternative rock including rock, punk and metal. It is produced and sold monthly. On the front cover you can see they have used a full shot of the band 'Paramore' for their main image, but also they have used a image of Joel Madden underneath which is quite large for an image which isn't the main one. On this image they have used medium shot. As you can see the persons face and top half of their body but you cannot see the rest like you can with the Paramore photo. They have used bright/dark colour themes throughout with a white background for the inside pages. I think they have used these colours to stand out. Their target audience I think is teenagers, as on the front cover they have all new bands and singers that teenagers will be familiar with nowadays. Also you can't imagine a 30 year old buying a magazine called Big Cheese. I think that the magazine are trying to get more people interested in music. The magazine looks attractive and funky and will attract people eye. I think this magazine will mainly attract people interested in rock music. Who dress similar to the people on the front and inspire to be like the celebrities. So they have tried to fit in bands which are similar to their target audience. I think the magazine is trying to bring across the magazine to be fun and with new exciting topics. Unlike the photos in magazines such as Q and NME they make the magazine look serious which it is. This magazine looks like its made to enjoy. I think the main purpose for this magazine is to inform readers about new bands/singers, upcoming gigs and concerts and news.Magazine Drafts
Here are a few draft ideas for the front cover, contents page and double page spread of my magazine.

2nd magaizne research
Language - Here is a cover of The Rolling Stone issue from 1976. You can tell the difference from a recent issue to one from around 50 years ago. On the front cover of this magazine is the most famous band ever, 'The Beatles' ! The colours on this front page are red, yellow, black and white. I think they have used these colours to go with the image they have used. This magazine cover is not as edited as they would be now but for back then it would have been really good. They have used their image to fill the full page. The camera angle they have used is a medium shot. The font of the magazine is consistant throughout the full page except for the main title which needs to stand out so they have used a different font. They have positioned the main image so that it is the first thing you see when you look at the magazine. For the contents page: On the contents page you can tell it is quiet old version of Rolling Stone magazine. They have centred the images in the middle with the text and page numbers on each side of the images. They have also kept the same theme throughout the magazine.
For the double page spread: This is a newer version but you can tell they have made the image clear and used smaller text than usual so you see the image first. They have used a full shot for the image. They have used the same colours throughout the 2 pages black, white and grey.
For the double page spread: This is a newer version but you can tell they have made the image clear and used smaller text than usual so you see the image first. They have used a full shot for the image. They have used the same colours throughout the 2 pages black, white and grey.
Institution - This text was produced by Rolling Stone magazine. The magazine is a U.S based magazine published every two weeks. It was founded by Jann Wenner in San Fransisco in 1967 (Who is still publisher and editor) and also mysic critic Ralph J. Gleason. The magazine was named after the Muddy Waters song of the same name.
Ideology - I think the rolling stone magazine isn't trying to give a a specific message, However they have used The Beatles for their main image because they were the most well known band in the 60's and this will attract readers, Also they have made them the main focus of the cover by filling the picture with them.
Audience - The target audience for The Rolling Stone Magazine is for Rock n Roll lovers aged around 20-40. The gender ranges however mostly males would buy a rock magazine. Females occasionally depending on who is in the magazine
Representations - I think the rolling stone magazine are trying to attract new readers with using big names as their cover image but also introducing new image such as the double spread introduces the new singer Nicky Minaj.

Text ideas
Here are a few text samples which i was trying out and maybe going to use but didn't in the end.
The text below is the text i did use for my double page spread design but i changed the colour to white instead of black.
Genre
I haven't chose a specific genre for my magazine as i will be including all different sorts of genres. The music will be mainly classic rock and indie/rock. They will be similar to magazines such as MOJO & Q.
Price of magazine
The pice of my magazine is going to be a reasonable price. Similar to MOJO, Q and NME. The price will be £3.00 so that it is fairly affordable but also reasonable for the quality. The magazine i have looked at have a price range between £3.50 - £4.99 so i have chose a price in the middle of this price range. I have chosen this price as the magazine will be monthly so the readers will not have to buy it every week and also they can afford it as a lot of my target audience are quite young and will not be able to afford every week. Also it will have a lot more information in it than it would if it was published every week.

Music Videos
Below i have posted some music videos which show the type of music i am using for my magazine. It is a mix between old music and new music.
Magazine Title
I have decided i am going to name my magazine:
STONE AGE
I decided on this name as my magazine is old and new music. Some people referr to the old times as The stone age as a joke and i can also imagine it on a music magazine. Ive chosen stone age as i am using old music and music from a new era.

Double Page spread design ideas
Here i have made a double page spread to see what ideas i can get to make my own when i do my final piece.

Target Audience
As my magazine is an alternative genre my target audience will be young mature music lovers (16-25 years old). I think this is a perfect target audience as these are the ages where they are able to buy the magazine without having to worry about cost. From the age of 16, people will start to become more interested in a wider range music and different genres than they listened to below 16 years old.
My target audience is similar to Mojo Magazine. They describe their audience as:
"Discerning and passionate music aficionados, the MOJO audience is predominately male (72%) and affluent (36% AB). These heavy consumers of music see their passion as discovery without boundaries, genre and decade being secondary to quality."
I am going to be reviewing a few Mojo magazines so i can get a good idea of what their conventions are and an idea to help with mine.

Music Magazine L.I.I.A.R
Language - The language used on the front page isnt the same as the cover usually. The colours usually on the cover are white background and red behind the Q which they have still used on this issue. They have created a smashed image asif the band, Kings Of Leon, are breaking through the cover. This ties in with the title thats used for the band. 'Breakthrough' Also with them using the smashed look could be used to give them a rock look. They have used Kings of Leon as their main image, as many readers will be familiar with the band and they are a widley known band so alot of readers will probably buy the issue and they will sell many copies. Also their album may have come out at the time. But to keep their cover origional they have kept ths Q text, red background and white text the same.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-IAxoqoqJ44
For the contents page straight away i can notice the colour theme they are using. Red white and black and also the text they use throughout the magazine. The conventions they have used are the masthead and the listed things of whats included in the issue. Also they have kept the number of image low on the contents page to keep all the interesting stuff for the rest of the magazine. Also they have sectioned pages into categories so that the reader would just have to look for the topic and then can find what they are looking for easier.

For the double page spread they have used a a3 page to fill with an image. They have used the image backwards. This is probably for presentation purposes. At the top of the page it says 'New to Q' and maybe this is where the theme comes in. They're posing asif they have been arrested and theyre new to this. It looks asif theyre unmasking themselves for the first time to the readers. Also they have kept the theme colours still with the red white and black.
Institution - The founders of Q magazine are Mark Ellen and David Hepworth. It was first published in 1986. Origionally is was called Cue (as in the sense of cueing a record, ready to play) but it was changed so it wouldnt be mistaken for a snooker magazine and was changed to Q.
Ideology - I think the message that Q are trying to show is that there is new music all the time. With the front cover shows that there are so many bands that are breaking through into the music industry. Also they show that they have quality music and information to give readers every month.

Audience - The target audience for Q magazine i think are mature music lovers who are looking for a change and want to know more about new music.
Representation - I think Q magazine are aiming to get people to read about different types of music that they wouldnt usually as the magazine varies in music genres and also to introduce new music to their readers.

LIIAR - Interpretation Of The Brief
I am going to be producing a music magazine for a specif genre of music. I will be designing and producing the front cover, the contents page and a double page spread. It must have a minimum of 4 images and all the images and text that i use must be my own.
Language - I will be using different types of camera angle for my front cover, contents page and double page spread. I will be using a theme throughout my 3 designs.
Institution - I will be producing a magazine which would be new and different to the other magazine out now. However i will be using some similar ideas from magazines which i have reviewed and looked at. I will be including a variety of conventions on my pages.
Ideology - I would like the genre of my magazine to be a mix but mainly indie/rock/old music. (Alternative) I will be trying to introduce different styles of music to people who may not have heard, thought about listening to. I do not want a specific genre magazine as i think that it is good to have a range of genres.
Audience - My target audience is going to be teenagers/young adults. As they are more likely to buy a music magazine however there are going to be ranges of old and new music so it could attract readers who may have been around at the time of some of the music and may have an interest.
Representation - I would like to represent different styles of music to readers. I would like to show that you can have a range of different music and not just one genre. I will make sure the colours and themes look presentable and not a certain way for a specific genre. For example Q and NME have a mature theme which makes it look smart. However in kerrang and meal hammer it is more dark and dismal themes to go with the dark heavy metal and rock genre.

Evaluation
Language - I have used a medium shot of one person to fill most fo the page. This make the image bold and interesting. I added a background to give more colour to my magazine and to make the picture stand out more. My photo is a photo of a student working on textiles work which works well with my magazine as it is for a fashion college. I have used a bold colours and fonts for my words, especially 'London' which may attract people as it is a popular city for fashion. I used mainly bold colours to make the words stand out and be noticable. I have made sure that the colours of the words on my cover match the colours of the background behind the photo.
Institution- The photo on the front of my magazine shows that the college is a environment that someone who is interested in fashion can learn and work. It would interest the audience as the cover makes it look attractive and a fun learning environment.
Ideology - The ideology i would like to portray is that the college looks like an interesting environment. Even though there is only one photo of a student working, the cover of my magazine should give a light feeling towards the audience to want to consider attending the college.
Audience - The audience of my magazine would be females mainly or males who are interested in fashion. Ages ranging from 16 - 25 and that would wish to pursue a career in fashion. Also the parents of the students would be part of the target audience so that they too can see into the college and find out whats going on and information they may want to read about . The audience would have to have an interest in fashion and the college.
Representation - The magazine would represent education and the college. To give a good output of the college to its students, future students and families. It would represent the college as fun and friendly environment and a good place to come and study fashion. I have used a student whos age is similar to my target audience. Hopefully my cover will influence people and help them imagine themselves coming to the college.
Overall i think that my magazine went fairly well. I did have some downfalls such as my photos being deleted and not starting till later on as i was on a trip when we first were told about it. The things i think didnt go quite well were my photos. I didnt think about how i should take my picture and what shots i should use. But thankfully my photos turned out quite well even though i lost some. Also when i designed my cover i didnt think about how i would layout my magazine thoroughly. I think that i couldn have improved my work more by starting earlier on producing some picture and understanding more how i should present my work. However i am pleased with my magazine.

NME Music Magazine.
Language - The camera angles on this magazine is a medium close shot. They have the peoples body in but not their full body. I think they used this shot to get their full posture in to give show that their a indie/rock band by the way their dressed and the magazine is that kind of genre. They would have used The Wombats as the picture on the front to attract their audience who like bands such as these.
Institution - The producer of this magazine is NME. They are a music company who produce magazines. They try to attract their audience by using bold pictures and text. Mainly putting a interview or story of a well known band on. Music is a big influence and attraction to teenagers and young adults. It has alot of information music based and would attract people with a big interest in music. Also i think it's a big influence by budget as this magazine is quite affordable and you get a wide quantity of information.
Ideology - Looking at the headlines on the cover, there are mainly about bands mis-haps or interviews and information about festivals. These would appeal to the readers especially the festivals as anybody loves a chance to go see their favourite band, and this is a way to find out how to see them, when and where. Also they include posters in the magazine which also the audience would be interested in getting. Mainly teenagers like to collect posters of their favourite band to stick on their bedroom wall.
Audience - The target audience for this magazine are mainly teenaers and young adults between the ages of 13- 25. These are the ages that are most interested in music and different genres. The front cover would appeal to the stereotyped "Indie/rock" people who enjoy band such asThe Wombats who are an indie rock band. The gender for the magazine ranges both male and female as everyone likes music so it depends what music genre you are into. The lifestyle of the people who read this are mainly people who are in education and will have the time to read and listen to music more than adults who have a daily job and work most of the time.
Representations - I think this magazine represents males more than females as there are no stories on the front cover that talk about women. They are all mainly male bands and this may appeal more to boys but will still appeal to females who like these bands. The front cover represents socials groups of stereotypes as different stereotypical groups like different styles of music and the bands on this magazine are a range of different genres. For example Muse are more of a progressive rock and Kings Of Leon are more indie rock.

College Magazine
L.I.I.A.R
Language - The camera angles on this cover is a full shot. You have the peoples full bodies in the picture and can see all of them. I think the creator used this image as they look like a band on a music magazine. This will attract young adults as this is one main thing they would be interested in.
Institution - This college magazine is called 'FUSE'. This looks like a magazine made by the college, however it could have been produced by the students. The students will have more of an idea what others will enjoy reading about and will find interesting.
Ideology - On the cover of this magazine they have included stories and issues which would relate to real life situations which people in the college may experience or find interesting to read about.
Audience - The audience for this magazine is college students as it is a college magazine. I don't think that it has a particular gender audience as it would probably been produced for any gender. The front cover would appeal to boys as it has a boy band on the front and alot of boy students may enjoy music and want to be in a band. It would appeal to girls as they may find the boys on the front cover attractive or might just find it interesting.
Representation - On the front cover of this magazine, the people are not represented as happy, maybe this is to give more of a professional look however it doesnt make the students look as fun. By the stories they have included a interview titled 'Hungover Stuntman' This could be a interview about drinking or may not but this gives the impression college students are about partying and drinking.

L.I.I.A.R Interpretation of the brief.
Language- Camera angles, close shot, full shot, zoomed shot etc. Editing (transitions ,continuity etc.) background edited if theres anything in the shot that isnt needed. Narrative, how the front cover is presented.
I will be using camera angles in my magazine for my main picture on my front cover and other photos that will be featured in my magazine.
Institution - Who produced the text. I will be producing my magazine and contents page. I will be taking the photo which i was use for the front cover and designing the whole magazine.
Ideology - This is the meaning of the text. The meaning of my magazine will be to educate and interest student in the magazine.
Audience- Target audience. My target audience will be students at college. This magazine will be for students interested in fashion and mainly females however there are males who are interested in fashion. Ages range however students in college are mainly between 16-20. The location of my college is London, so it will target a range of people from different areas as there would be a range of people from different parts of the country at the college. It will target people who are interested in pursuing a career in fashion.
Represetation - This is how you represent the text. For example my magazines fashion so i would have to make it appeal to people who are interested in fashion and include images and text that would encourage my target audience. I would also have to think about how good my target audience would expect the magazine to be.
