Target Audience

As my magazine is an alternative genre my target audience will be young mature music lovers (16-25 years old). I think this is a perfect target audience as these are the ages where they are able to buy the magazine without having to worry about cost. From  the age of 16, people will start to become more interested in a wider range music and different genres than they listened to below 16 years old.
My target audience is similar to Mojo Magazine. They describe their audience as:

"Discerning and passionate music aficionados, the MOJO audience is predominately male (72%) and affluent (36% AB). These heavy consumers of music see their passion as discovery without boundaries, genre and decade being secondary to quality."

I am going to be reviewing a few Mojo magazines so i can get a good idea of what their conventions are and an idea to help with mine.

Music Magazine L.I.I.A.R

Language - The language used on the front page isnt the same as the cover usually. The colours usually on the cover are white background and red behind the Q which they have still used on this issue. They have created a smashed image asif the band, Kings Of Leon, are breaking through the cover. This ties in with the title thats used for the band. 'Breakthrough' Also with them using the smashed look could be used to give them a rock look. They have used Kings of Leon as their main image, as many readers will be familiar with the band and they are a widley known band so alot of readers will probably buy the issue and they will sell many copies. Also their album may have come out at the time. But to keep their cover origional they have kept ths Q text, red background and white text the same.

For the contents page straight away i can notice the colour theme they are using. Red white and black and also the text they use throughout the magazine. The conventions they have used are the masthead and the listed things of whats included in the issue. Also they have kept the number of image low on the contents page to keep all the interesting stuff for the rest of the magazine. Also they have sectioned pages into categories so that the reader would just have to look for the topic and then can find what they are looking for easier.

For the double page spread they have used a a3 page to fill with an image. They have used the image backwards. This is probably for presentation purposes. At the top of the page it says 'New to Q' and maybe this is where the theme comes in. They're posing asif they have been arrested and theyre new to this. It looks asif theyre unmasking themselves for the first time to the readers. Also they have kept the theme colours still with the red white and black.

Institution - The founders of Q magazine are Mark Ellen and David Hepworth. It was first published in 1986. Origionally is was called Cue (as in the sense of cueing a record, ready to play) but it was changed so it wouldnt be mistaken for a snooker magazine and was changed to Q.

Ideology - I think the message that Q are trying to show is that there is new music all the time. With the front cover shows that there are so many bands that are breaking through into the music industry. Also they show that they have quality music and information to give readers every month.

Audience - The target audience for Q magazine i think are mature music lovers who are looking for a change and want to know more about new music.

Representation - I think Q magazine are aiming to get people to read about different types of music that they wouldnt usually as the magazine varies in music genres and also to introduce new music to their readers.

LIIAR - Interpretation Of The Brief

I am going to be producing a music magazine for a specif genre of music. I will be designing and producing the front cover, the contents page and a double page spread. It must have a minimum of 4 images and all the images and text that i use must be my own.

Language - I will be using different types of camera angle for my front cover, contents page and double page spread. I will be using a theme throughout my 3 designs.

Institution - I will be producing a magazine which would be new and different to the other magazine out now. However i will be using some similar ideas from magazines which i have reviewed and looked at. I will be including a variety of conventions on my pages.

Ideology - I would like the genre of my magazine to be a mix but mainly indie/rock/old music. (Alternative) I will be trying to introduce different styles of music to people who may not have heard, thought about listening to. I do not want a specific genre magazine as i think that it is good to have a range of genres.

Audience - My target audience is going to be teenagers/young adults. As they are more likely to buy a music magazine however there are going to be ranges of old and new music so it could attract readers who may have been around at the time of some of the music and may have an interest.

Representation - I would like to represent different styles of music to readers. I would like to show that you can have a range of different music and not just one genre. I will make sure the colours and themes look presentable and not a certain way for a specific genre. For example Q and NME have a mature theme which makes it look smart. However in kerrang and meal hammer it is more dark and dismal themes to go with the dark heavy metal and rock genre.
